| Achilles Heel - surely they can help |
The battle is lost! Off for an 11 miler last night and did not make it back until 10.45pm. To add insult to my achilles injury I forgot my keys. Jen had gone to bed and was not best pleased at having to get out of bed to let me in. Telling her my story of woe was given short shrift and there was not much sympathy coming my way. So what happened?
Ran out the door at 9pm to complete an 11 miler. This should have taken just over 90 minutes. Had been having issues with the right achilles for weeks now and had done some web searches for exercises and options to lessen the pain. A band was suggested which goes over the achilles adding pressure to it. The procedure is akin to pressing your finger on the string of a guitar to stop it vibrating. I made a home made device out of tubing and off I went. It was great. It really worked. It was the first time in weeks that I had run pain free.
That was until mile 7 when the usual pain started to emerge again. It would come and go but after 7 miles it got so sore that I had to stop. I was so pissed off. Not only was my achilles painful, I was still 4 miles from home. I soldiered on walking for a couple of minutes going through in my head the consequences of a lay off, the damage already caused by this run and how long it would take me to get home. It was really depressing. I was so hacked off. Started a slow jog after a couple of minutes and there was no pain. I have to say that I did not understand this.
I feel that the tubing worked and gave some relief and I may by the proper device. In reality I need to get the achilles sorted out. I have to bite the bullet and go and see someone. If they prescribe rest then so be it. There is no point in continuing with this if all I am doing at the begining of a run is worrying whether I can complete if because of the achilles. Yes this will have an impact on training and yes if the lay off is considerable the impact will be detrimental but I need to make the decision now with enough time to have a rest and still get back to training with time still available before April. Not ideal and not something I want but I do not think I have any other option. So it is back to the bike and swimmig for cross training to try and keep the fitness levels up.
I have booked into Achilles Heel who sorted me out before the New York Marathon in 2008. Emma there is to see me on Saturday morning. She knows her stuff as I recall she had done a phd on the achilles and it is her specialist subject. Lets hope that she can sort out my old bag of bones.
The numbers for what they are worth - 10 miles - 8.44 pace - cadence 84.1 - 140 HR avg - 1068 calories
