Dropped Amy off after hockey at her concert where she was playing the piano and decided to head back into work to try and catch up before Friday's onslaught. Strapped on the shoes and with some trepidation took my first steps in a little over a week and ran into work. This involved going up University Avenue and into Kelvingrove Park and along Claremeont Terrace to the bottom of Bath Street. I know that 1.78 miles according to the Garmin is no big deal but to me it was a big achievement given the fact that I did not break down and felt no twinge in the hamstring. I need to build up the miles slowly and allow the hamstring to build strength as the weeks go on. It is really difficult to judge how much is enough. I must ensure that if there is any pain to ease down before a strain occurs. Did a couple of hours at work and headed off back home. Ran at a reasonable clip up to the park and eased off there as I began to feel a tightening of the hamstring. It was difficult to judge if there was a problem as I was running with my tubi grip in place and it had begun to slip down my thigh. I felt that the tightness was caused by the slipping of the tubi grip as after I got back home the hamstring was not sore at all. I have iced the leg and did a bit of stretching so I will see how it reacts on Thursday morning. Hoping to get a swim in before I get to work if I can get out of my bed.
I feel much better now that I have had a chance to get out on the road again. Listening to a pod cast which said that running is not about times but staying fit, getting outdoors and relieving stress. Completely agree on this but not sure that times, for me anyway, are not important. They give me a driver to motivate me to get out the door. I think that without it I would not be as committed to running as much as I do. Today was not about times however and it was great just to be able to go out at an easy pace and just run. Brilliant!
Numbers at last - 3.11 miles - 26.27 mins - 8.30 pace - 134 avgHR - Cadence 81.5 - 428 calories
