Before we made the trip down to Millport this afternoon for Easter lunch, I managed a run out on the canal for a 5 miler easy run. The time of 43.36 mins reflects a very easy paced run. Did not push it at all as this was going to be the first of two runs today. The idea was to run around the island to mum's place on Millport whilst the girl's got a lift from my brother. The weather was mild on the morning jog. Not a soul out on the toe path which was odd as the amount of runners around Glasgow has increased dramatically over the last couple of weeks as the training for the women's 10K begins in earnest and those tackling London and Edinburgh Marathons finish off the their training schedules.
The weather was blowy and with all the twists and turns on the run back alot of the early part of the run was into a stiff headwind. It was also cold with a smir of rain in the air. The run around the island from the ferry slip to the town of Millport was a bit of a curate's egg. It started off well enough but as I approached the town the achilles started to flare up. This is not good news given that it was probably only 4-5 miles. It was certainly sore and reduced the pace. Not even that nice lady on the Ipod could make it better. I wonder if my running action has changed with a sense of compensating for the hamstring leading to a change in the way that my right leg hits the ground. Whatever it is I am worried that it will be a whole lot of pain for the marathon if this rears its head a quarter of the way into the marathon. Having trained to HR it is very annoying at the moment not having a HR monitor to gauge how much effort I am exerting on these runs. The hamstring was tight and I am reluctant at the moment to push the pace in case I have a relapse. Mum has given me the loan of a "Relaxing Swedish Massager". Do not ask! I have already plugged it in and watched it do its thing. Oh my lord! I will report on its effectiveness over the next week.
The effort was not great and it was not pushed in any way. I have been surprised at how easy these runs have been since I cam back from Machrihanish. They do say that you can feel a floating sensation when you are in taper mode. Where it not for the hamstring and the achilles I would be far more confident that I could give it a real go in a fortnight. I have two weeks to get both the achilles and the hamstring as right as they can be so that I can give the marathon a real go.
Just had a look at the numbers for the run around part of Millport. I was surprised that it was 8.13 miles. What was more surprising was that according to the watch this had me comleting this at 6.40 pace. The watch must be wrong as the effort on the run was just not up with a sub marathon pace. For a moment there I thought I was really back in the game. Time to wake up and smell the Joe. I have taken the medicine and recalculated the distance - it is only 6.75 miles. Cue pall of depression!
Numbers - 5 miles - 43.36 mins
